Forskolin is a potent stimulator of an enzyme adenylate cyclase. This enzyme is actively involved in the production of cAMP i.e. cyclic adenosine monophosphate. This cAMP in turn, leads to the production of an extremely important compound ATP i.e. adenosine triphosphate. ATP is the body’s major energy resource and it provides energy for the proper functioning of a number of vital mechanisms like renal filtration and elimination, hepatic cleaning and metabolism, and more.

Forskolin has a well-defined role in the treatment of obesity and cardiovascular diseases because of its effect on the production of cAMP. Forskolin increases cAMP concentration in the body and this cAMP acts as a ‘second messenger’. It means that cAMP increases the concentration of certain CNS-related neurotransmitters which signal the central nervous system to increase the production of fat-metabolizing hormones. One of the major fat-metabolizing hormones activated by Forskolin is testosterone.

This testosterone enhances the process of lipolysis i.e. lipid breakdown in the body. When stored, excessive fat is broken down and eliminated from the body and there’s a significant decrease in the weight of obese individuals. Also, testosterone is involved in the release of fat from the fat-storing cells which further potentiates the process of weight reduction in an individual.

This effect of Forskolin was examined in a major scientific study conducted by the University Of Kansas. It was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-induced study which was conducted on obese test subjects.

At the end of the study, it was observed that the test subjects who received Forskolin treatment showed a significant decrease in their fat mass i.e. FM and total body fat percentage i.e. BF. These effects were induced because Forskolin increased the concentration of the fat-metabolizing hormone i.e. testosterone in the body. Hence, it was concluded that Forskolin can be used as a beneficial medicinal agent for significant fat reduction in obese individuals.

One of the major reasons of cardiovascular disorders is the formation of cholesterol plaque in the arteries which is called as atherosclerosis. When the level of cholesterol increases in the bloodstream, this cholesterol starts getting deposited in the inner walls of the blood vessels, thereby leading to the narrowing of these blood vessels. When blood vessels are narrowed, the viscous blood exerts more pressure while passing through them.

This causes an increased arterial pressure leading to hypertension i.e. increased blood pressure in an individual. Also, atherosclerosis obstructs the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart. This leads to the hypoxia i.e. deprivation of sufficient oxygen supply to the cardiac tissues. This hypoxia leads to angina and myocardial infarction i.e. heart attack.

Hence, by decreasing the levels of bad cholesterol in the body, Forskolin effectively prevents the onset of cardiovascular diseases in an individual.

Role of Forskolin In the Treatment of Open-Angle Glaucoma

Complete destruction of optic nerve leads to blindness in an individual. In recent times, glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness which majorly affects the elderly.

Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma which is caused because of blockage or clogging of drainage canals which causes an increased intraocular pressure. This increased intraocular pressure damages the nerve fibers of the optic nerve, thereby causing blindness in an individual.

The ciliary processes of the eye constantly produce aqueous humor which regulates the intraocular pressure. The production and drainage rate of aqueous humor must be perfectly balanced for an accurate intraocular pressure. A variation between these rates leads to an increased intraocular pressure.

Forskolin helps in the treatment of open-angle glaucoma by increasing the production of cAMP which reduces the net flow of aqueous humor, thereby balancing the production and drainage rate of aqueous humor. When these rates are balanced, the intraocular pressure normalizes and the condition of open-angle glaucoma is successfully managed.

A scientific study published in the Journal of Postgraduate Medicine, examined the efficiency and safety of Forskolin eye drops in the treatment of open-angle glaucoma. The study was conducted on 90 test subjects with an increased intraocular pressure. At the end of the study, each subject who was treated with Forskolin eye drops showed a massive decrease in their intraocular pressure, thereby establishing the beneficial role of Forskolin in the treatment of glaucoma.

Role of Forskolin in the Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections

A scientific research was conducted at the Duke University Medical Center to study the role of Forskolin in the treatment of urinary tract infections. The research paper was published in the Nature Medicine scientific journal. This study was conducted on rodents and it was revealed from the study that the infection-causing bacteria and other microbes hide in the inner lining of the urinary bladder due to which they’re not killed by the antibiotics.

Forskolin was found to be extremely beneficial in the destruction of these microbes. This is because Forskolin increases the levels of ATP which in turn increases different metabolic and cellular activities in the body. The contractions of urinary bladder are also increased by ATP which leads to the expulsion of these hiding microbes.

Once these microbes are out of hiding, they’re easily identified and killed by the antibiotics. This is how Forskolin helps in the treatment and stops the reoccurrence of urinary tract infections in an individual.

On the basis of the abovementioned research, it can be concluded that Forskolin can be effectively used in the treatment of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, glaucoma, and urinary tract infections.
